San Juan Island National Historical Park
AAA Editor Notes
San Juan Island National Historical Park is on San Juan Island. The park commemorates the British and American struggle for possession of the San Juans—a dispute that culminated in the Pig War of 1859. The lone casualty of the war was a stray pig, and in 1872 arbitration sustained the American claim to the San Juans and set the boundary between the United States and Canada.
The English Camp is 10 miles northwest of Friday Harbor on a cove known as Garrison Bay at 3905 W. Valley Rd. The blockhouse, commissary, hospital, barracks and a formal garden are restored; only the blockhouse and barracks are open to the public. The American Camp is on the southeastern tip of the island, 6 miles from Friday Harbor at 4668 Cattle Point Rd. Vestiges of the principal American defense work are preserved. The officers' quarters and laundress' quarters have been restored.
Beaches, trails and a small boat dock are within the park; hunting and camping are not permitted.
Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Picnicking is permitted.
