Wytheville’s Heritage Preservation Center, 115 W. Spiller St., is in a former schoolhouse; the site encompasses a visitor orientation area, a genealogical library, two historic houses and a restored gas station. The Thomas J. Boyd Museum, 295 Tazewell St., features an interactive exhibit about the 1950s polio epidemic, Civil War displays and local history exhibits. Focusing on 19th-century family life and early medicine, the Haller-Gibboney Rock House Museum, 205 Tazewell St., is the former home of Wytheville's first resident physician. The Great Lakes to Florida Museum, 975 Tazewell St., is housed in a restored 1926 gas station and recalls the days when Route 21 was the main road from Ohio to Florida.
