Freer/Sackler: The Smithsonian's Museums of Asian Art

Freer/Sackler: The Smithsonian's Museums of Asian Art are on the National Mall; the Freer is at Jefferson Dr. and 12th St. S.W., while the Sackler is at 1050 Independence Ave. S.W., entered from a pavilion in the Enid A. Haupt Garden, next to the Smithsonian Institution Building (the Castle). The two galleries are connected underground as well.
The Freer Gallery houses a world-renowned collection of Japanese, Korean, Buddhist, South Asian, Islamic and Chinese art that includes ancient works, porcelains, ceramics, calligraphy and paintings. The museum also features a courtyard garden.
A collection of American paintings includes works by Thomas Wilmer Dewing, Abbott Handerson Thayer and Dwight William Tryon. “Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Peacock Room,” an elaborate dining room designed and executed by James McNeill Whistler, is his only existing interior scheme. Displayed in this room is Whistler's “The Princess from the Land of Porcelain” and a collection of Charles Lang Freer's original Asian ceramics.
The Sackler Gallery is housed in a three-level complex that, except for the entrance pavilion, is entirely underground. The permanent collection of art from the Mediterranean to Japan spans ancient times to the present. Included are paintings, sculptures and objects in bronze, jade, silver, gold, lacquer and ceramics. The gallery also has a collection of works from the Asian diaspora and regularly features changing exhibitions from museums around the world.
Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
