Valley Brethren-Mennonite Heritage Center (Crossroads Heritage Center)

Valley Brethren-Mennonite Heritage Center (Crossroads Heritage Center) is off I-81 exit 247B; take US 33 3.3 mi. w., Garbers Church Rd. .5 mi. s., then just w. to 1921A Heritage Center Way. The center conveys the related stories of Brethren and Mennonite settlers who began arriving in the Shenandoah Valley in the 1700s. Some moved there from Pennsylvania, where religious freedom was espoused but land was scarce. Interpretive displays and an orientation video highlight each group’s spiritual beliefs and way of life.

Also addressed is Civil War history, including the systematic burning of the Shenandoah Valley by Union troops and its effects on the civilian population. In addition such historical structures as the 1829 Weaver-Brunk Log House, 1854 Burkholder-Myers House and the 1904 Whitmer School are on the grounds.
