River Farm is off George Washington Memorial Pkwy., 4 mi. s. of Old Town Alexandria, on the Potomac River at 7931 E. Boulevard Dr. George Washington bought this property in 1760 and may have planted the black walnut tree that still stands in the meadow near the main buildings.
Now headquarters for the American Horticultural Society, the 25-acre site boasts naturalistic and formal gardens. Of special interest are a champion Osage orange tree, a 4-acre meadow, a special children's garden and demonstration gardens. Rotating exhibitions by regional artists are held in the manor house, which was built in the early 20th century.
Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
