St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, 1171 Main St., is a public library and art gallery containing 19th-century landscape paintings from the Hudson River School. The collection includes Albert Bierstadt's monumental “The Domes of the Yosemite.” Donated to the town by Horace Fairbanks in 1871, the historic landmark has Victorian reading rooms showcasing elaborate woodwork and spiral staircases. Regularly scheduled public programs include poetry readings and educational lectures.
