The Witte Museum, 3801 Broadway St. in Brackenridge Park, stands beside the San Antonio River as it runs through the 10-acre campus where large, open galleries focus on the nature, science and culture of Texas through a collection of historic artifacts and scientific specimens. Enter through the Susan Naylor Center where water, land and sky meet as pterosaurs glide overhead and exhibits tell the story of Texas as it was millions of years ago and how it is shaping our world today. Visitors can view extinct reptiles from 110 million years ago in the Dinosaur Gallery as well as a display about the ancient seas that once covered much of Texas. The Texas Wild Gallery allows visitors to get up close and personal with some 150 Texas animals in their habitats through dioramas, including a bat cave and a towering bison beneath an overhead thunderstorm.

Stretch your muscles and your mind at the hands-on stations and full-body activities across four floors of interactive adventures for all ages at The H-E-B Body Adventure. Make a special POWERpass card to track your progress as you go. Guests can examine real preserved human specimens, view a life-size anatomy table and stroll through culinary and medicinal plant gardens and then partake in a live cooking demonstration of healthy snacks.

Finish up at the Mays Family Center where the South Texas Heritage Center is home to hundreds of artifacts that illustrate life in Texas. Meet freighters, store clerks, oil workers, chili queens and cattle kings as you explore Texas through an artist's eye in this ever-changing art gallery. If you head outside, there are gardens, a treehouse, a waterworks station and a view of the San Antonio River. Theater performances also are offered.

Note: The museum is free to all every Tuesday from 3 p.m.–6 p.m. .

Food is available. Time: Allow 3 hours minimum.
