San Antonio Botanical Garden
AAA Editor Notes
San Antonio Botanical Garden is 5 mi. n.e. at 555 Funston Pl. Covering 38 acres near Fort Sam Houston , this botanical garden balances formal gardens with 11 acres of indigenous plants. The Texas Native Trail includes three regions: East Texas Pineywoods, Hill Country, and South Texas Plains, which feature native flora and fauna, historical cabins and a limestone spring. The Culinary Garden and Outdoor Kitchen, the Discovery & Welcome Center and the Family Adventure Garden are some of the newer areas guests can explore.
In the more formally cultivated areas are a rose garden, an old-fashioned garden, a Japanese garden, a sacred garden and a sensory garden. Occupying some of the highest ground in the city, the garden's glass Lucile Halsell Conservatory offers a glimpse of world climates inside its modern greenhouses. Guided bird and plant tours are offered monthly; phone ahead to confirm schedule. Food is available daily for lunch and dinner. A weekend brunch also is offered.
Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
