AAA Editor Notes
Cascade Caverns, at 226 Cascade Caverns Rd. via I-10 exit 543, is part of a 105-acre park. Guided tours of the underground caves take visitors through spacious, 25- to 65-foot-high chambers and low, narrow passageways. You'll view unique rock formations like “chubby” stalactites and enormous solution domes; an underground lake; and such animals as Eastern Pipistrelle bats, cliff and leopard frogs, and the albino Cascade Cavern salamanders. The cavern walls, ceilings and floors are damp, and the temperature remains a constant 64 F.
The First Friday Flashlight Tour is a 1.5-hour night tour held the first Friday of the month. A 2-hour tour of the lower cave also is offered.
Note: Sneakers are recommended, as the steps leading to the cavern are steep and the cavern floor can be slippery.
Guided tours are available. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
