Andrew Johnson National Historic Site is at 101 N. College St. The site, dedicated to Andrew Johnson, includes his early home, the Andrew Johnson Homestead and the national cemetery, where a monument at his gravesite symbolizes his adherence to the ideals of democracy. Two major achievements of his administration were the purchase of Alaska from Russia and his defense of the Constitution during his impeachment proceedings.
A museum contains a tailor shop in which Johnson worked. Tickets for a half-hour homestead tour, which includes a 14-minute film, are available at the nearby visitor center; visitors should sign up at least 15 minutes prior to tour start.
