Signal Mountain is 9 mi. n. off US 127. The mountain, the southernmost point on Walden's Ridge, got its name during the Civil War when it was used as a signaling point by the Union army; it had served a similar purpose for Native Americans. Signal Point and James Point offer views of the Tennessee River as it passes through the Tennessee River Gorge.
