Mepkin Abbey

Mepkin Abbey is at 1098 Mepkin Abbey Rd., following signs. This was once Mepkin Plantation, home to Revolutionary patriot and politician Henry Laurens, whose contributions include serving as president of the Continental Congress 1777-78. The serene terraced gardens and oak-strewn grounds overlooking the Cooper River are now home to Trappist monks. Visitors may walk through the public gardens on their own. Tours of the monastery (closed to the public except for the tours) are given on most days. Guided tours of the church and monastery include an explanation of monastic life and the history of the abbey.
