AAA Editor Notes
Heyward House Historic Center, 70 Boundary St., was built in the 1840s as a summer retreat for plantation owner John James Cole. One of the area's few remaining antebellum residences, the simple timber-frame house exemplifies Carolina farmhouse architecture and includes some original furnishings. A summer kitchen and a slave cabin are on the grounds.

Guided walking tours of Bluffton's historic district also are offered; tours begin with the Heyward House and grounds and continue through the oak-lined streets.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
