AAA Editor Notes
Old Slave Mart Museum, 6 Chalmers St., chronicles the international, regional and local stories of the African slave trade. Slave sales held here 1856-63 aided the ongoing interstate slave trade. The site was called Ryan's Mart and extended to Queen Street; it encompassed this structure as well as a kitchen, morgue, a four-story brick building that included a jail, and an enclosed yard. The museum features large panels with historic information as well as a few displays of historical items.
The museum is not recommended for young children because most of the museum exhibits require a significant amount of reading.
Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
