Pointe-au-Père Maritime Historic Site—The Empress of Ireland Museum (Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père—Musée Empress of Ireland) is at 1000 rue du Phare in the sector of Pointe-au-Père. The museum's exhibits describe regional history; marine life; and the shipwreck of the Empress of Ireland, a cruise ship which sank off Rimouski on May 29, 1914, with a loss of 1,012 lives. A 3-D projection re-creates the final moments of the ship's journey.
Also on-site is the Onondaga, a 90-metre (295-ft.) Canadian Navy submarine in service for 33 years. A 45-minute self-guiding audio tour relates the daily life of a submariner as well as the vessel's mechanical engineering.
Guided tours are available; narration in English is offered.
