Morrin Cultural Centre & Heritage Site
AAA Editor Notes
Morrin Cultural Centre & Heritage Site (Morrin Centre culturel et du patrimoine) is at 44 rue chaussée des Ecossais. This former prison houses the Library of the Literary and Historical Society of Québec, which was founded in 1824 by Lord Dalhousie, Governor of Lower Canada. The library has evolved into the only English library in the city and its environs, becoming a repository for Canadiana, classic works and current publications. It also hosts cultural, literary and historical events.
Visitors can see the old cells—complete with graffiti and the iron rings used to chain prisoners—and explore the classrooms from the Morrin College period (1862-1902), including the chemistry laboratory and College Hall. Guided tours lasting between 45 and 60 minutes are offered in English and French.
