Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary, 2027 Fairmount Ave., opened in 1829 with a revolutionary design in prison facilities: private cells with skylights, individual recreation areas and cellblocks radiating from a central rotunda. Also new was the reform concept that emphasized isolation and productive work with the goal of inspiring penitence in the hearts of prisoners. Multimedia displays and art exhibitions portray life on the inside. Original cell blocks, the restored synagogue, a baseball diamond and Al Capone's cell can be seen. An audio tour, a 1-hour guided tour (subject to availability) and interactive criminal justice exhibits are featured.
