Fort York National Historic Site
AAA Editor Notes
Fort York National Historic Site, off Fleet St. between Bathurst St. and Strachan Ave. at 250 Fort York Blvd., is known as the birthplace of urban Toronto. Established in 1793, the fort is the site where the 1813 Battle of York took place during the War of 1812. Rebuilt 1813-16, eight original buildings have been restored to their 1812 appearance and depict early military life in Upper Canada.
Historical tours of the fort and barracks provide visitors with an understanding of the lives of both officers and enlisted men. Seasonal demonstrations include cannon firing, music and cooking. Military drill and fife and drum demonstrations are presented daily July through August. Special events are offered throughout the year. A new visitor center at the entrance contains permanent and changing exhibitions, and a film about the site is shown in the orientation theatre.
Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
