Thorla-McKee Oil Well

Thorla-McKee Oil Well is off I-77 exit 25, then 1 mi. e. on SR 78. A historical marker describes the site where the first oil-producing well in North America was discovered in 1814 when Silas Thorla and Robert McKee were drilling for salt. The well casing, made of a hollow sycamore log, is still visible. The well continues to produce oil and gas.
