AAA Editor Notes
Hower House is on the n.e. edge of the University of Akron campus at 60 Fir Hill. This 28-room Victorian mansion, designed in the Second Empire Italianate style, was built in 1871 by Akron industrialist John Henry Hower. The distinctive floor plan consists of parlors surrounding a circular center hall, similar to the Akron Plan for Sunday Schools popularized in the late 19th century, as well as many significant architectural details. The home is filled with pieces collected from around the world by the Hower family members over the span of three generations.
