Alamance County Historical Museum is off I-40/85 exit 143 to 4777 SR 62S. The museum is inside the 19th-century home of Michael Holt III and birthplace of Edwin Michael Holt, an early textile manufacturer. It's part of a former grain plantation once known as Oak Grove, where there were at least 51 enslaved African Americans by start of the Civil War. Guided tours take visitors through the two-story Italianate Revival plantation house, which contains furnishings and accessories from the mid-1800s as well as changing exhibits. The Holt family cemetery and several farm buildings constructed immediately after the Civil War also are on the premises.
