Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum, 6 mi. e. on SR 27, is in one of the oldest active lighthouses in the country. The 1796 lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington in 1792. Visitors may climb the 137 steps to the top of the tower. Conway Visitor Center features exhibits pertaining to the region's maritime history, and a video presentation offers additional information about the lighthouse.
