Wood benches and lounges flank concrete pathways, as do more than 350 plant species, including such colorful native flowers as asters, coneflowers and primroses; such trees as crabapple, sassafras and sumac; wild grasses and shrubs. The W. 23rd Street lawn is perfect for picnicking and sunbathing. Areas of the park provide unobstructed views of the Hudson River, the city skyline and the Statue of Liberty.
Sections 1 and 2 of the park opened in 2009 and 2011 respectively. The final and northernmost leg opened in September 2014 and is called the High Line at the Rail Yards. Traveling between West 30th and West 34th streets, this section features a kid's exploration area, rail track walks, woodlands, seasonal wildflowers and other horticultural delights. The park in its entirety now connects the neighborhoods of the Meatpacking District, Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen.
Note: Bicycles, skateboards, dogs and alcohol are not permitted.
Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
