New York City Fire Museum, 1 blk. n. of the Holland Tunnel at 278 Spring St. between Hudson & Varick sts., occupies a 1904 Beaux Arts-style firehouse. Permanent and temporary exhibitions document the evolution of firefighting technology, beginning with the early bucket brigades, and depict the traditions and romantic lore of firefighting. Fire Safety Learning Center is designed to teach visitors about fire hazards in the home and how to escape a fire. A permanent memorial exhibit honors members of the FDNY who died Sept. 11, 2001.
