AAA Editor Notes
African Burial Ground National Monument is between Duane and Elk sts., just n. of City Hall at 290 Broadway, First Floor. The 18th-century cemetery was discovered in 1991. Although much of the 5-acre tract lies beneath existing buildings, it is believed to hold more than 15,000 bodies of African slaves and free people; 419 bodies were recovered and ceremoniously reinterred. An interpretive center contains displays of artifacts, including buttons, shells, shrouds, pins and beads, belonging to the free and enslaved Africans who lived and worked in 18th-century Manhattan.

Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
