Very Large Array (VLA) Radio Telescope

Very Large Array (VLA) Radio Telescope is 50 mi. w. on US 60 to 1003 Lopezville Rd. One of the world's premier radio telescope observatories, it consists of 27 radio telescopes, each weighing 230 tons. The parabolic dish portion of the antenna measures 82 feet in diameter. For optimum tracking, the antennas are maneuvered along a Y-shaped grid of railroad tracks that stretch for miles across the desert floor. Self-guiding walking tours to a working antenna start at the visitor center, which provides an orientation film and educational exhibits.
