Wentworth-Gardner and Tobias Lear Houses

Wentworth-Gardner and Tobias Lear Houses, at 50 Mechanic St. on the Portsmouth Harbour Trail, are said to rank among the finest Georgian-style buildings in the country. The restored blocked-front 1760 Wentworth-Gardner House is known for its doorway and woodcarvings. The Tobias Lear House was the childhood home of Tobias Lear V, George Washington's private secretary; Washington visited the house during his 1789 trip to New Hampshire.
