Lehman Caves, 5500 W. SR 488 within Great Basin National Park, consists of illuminated marble and limestone passages that have many colorful formations and curious shield or palette shapes. Although the first written mention of the cave was in an 1885 newspaper article, it may have been discovered earlier by homesteaders or miners. Absalom S. Lehman probably was the first to realize the significance of the underground galleries. After conducting his own exploration, he guided parties through the cave until his death in 1891.
Note: To prevent the spread of White Nose Syndrome, a disease that affects the bat population, all visitors must be screened and some individuals may be required to either change or clean clothing, shoes and other items prior to entering the cave. The tour covers about a half-mile and includes six stairways. Flash cameras are allowed, but tripods and backpacks are not. The cave temperature is 50 F, so a sweater or light jacket is recommended.
