Jefferson Barracks Historic Park

Jefferson Barracks Historic Park is at jct. Grant Rd. and Kingston Dr., about 10 mi. s. of downtown via the I-55 S. Broadway exit; the visitor center is at 345 North Rd. Established in 1826, the site was a supply post for troops in the West. A museum in the 1857 powder magazine depicts the history of the barracks, and the Ordnance Building presents changing exhibits. The laborers' house and a stable dating from 1851 are restored. An overlook offers a view of the Mississippi River. More than 70,000 servicemen are buried in the park, one of the largest national cemeteries in the country.
