Shepherd of the Hills Homestead
AAA Editor Notes
Shepherd of the Hills Homestead is 2 mi. w. at 5586 W. 76 Country Blvd. This working homestead evokes the farm featured in Harold Bell Wright's novel “The Shepherd of the Hills.” Jeep-driven guided tours take visitors past Old Matt's Cabin, home of the leading characters, which contains most of its original furnishings. Also on the site are a gristmill, sawmill and a reconstructed church similar to those in which Wright preached during his years in the Ozarks.
Stone statues of the book's characters stand on Inspiration Point, where the author lived. Inspiration Tower, standing 230 feet high, affords panoramic views of the hills and valleys surrounding the homestead. ATV and horseback tours also are available. During the Trail of Lights celebration, which takes place nightly in November and December, the homestead is decorated with more than 80 festively illuminated drive-through displays.
