Pavek Museum of Broadcasting

Pavek Museum of Broadcasting is at 3517 Raleigh Ave., just e. of SR 100 off the W. 36th St. exit, then just n. on Raleigh Ave. It preserves and documents the early history of broadcasting through a collection of antique radio receivers, transmitters and televisions.

Visitors tour the museum with a hand-held device, similar to a cell phone, that plays audio and video. Highlights include a working 1912 rotary spark-gap transmitter (similar to one used aboard the Titanic) that really does spark, Bing Crosby's first recording device and a 1929 RCA theremin, an electronic musical instrument that produces an eerie high-pitched sound. Kids can create their own radio broadcasts in an authentic 1960s-era broadcast booth.
