Museum of Ojibwa Culture
AAA Editor Notes
Museum of Ojibwa Culture is at 500 N. State St. The park is the site of Father Jacques Marquette’s grave. A statue, an interpretive kiosk about his life, a garden and a longhouse are on the grounds. The museum, in a restored 19th-century Jesuit church, is dedicated to the Ojibwa—the original inhabitants of the upper Great Lakes region. Displays include artifacts, some dating from 6000 B.C., and reproductions. The site has yielded important archeological finds—most dating back to the Huron, Ottawa and French settlements of the late 1600s. A typical Ojibwa family is portrayed in an 8-minute film, and video of the building of an Ojibwa canoe can be watched.
