Western Gateway Heritage State Park is in the restored freight yard district off SR 8 at 9 Furnace St. bypass. The park features a collection of six renovated buildings containing shops, a restaurant and exhibits. In the former Boston and Maine Freight House, the visitor center chronicles the cultural history of North Adams; 19th-century railroad and industrial history; and the building of the Hoosac Tunnel 1851-75, an engineering feat that took 196 lives.
