Mitchell House: Birthplace of Maria Mitchell, 4 Vestal St., is a typical Quaker-style Nantucket house, built in 1790, that was the birthplace of America's first woman astronomer. Exhibits depict the life of Mitchell, her discoveries and teachings. Vestal Street Observatory, 3 Vestal St., offers 1-hour tours and features an outdoor scale-model of the solar system, a planar sundial, sunspot observations and a permanent astronomy exhibit.
The Maria Mitchell Association also maintains two off-campus sites. The Maria Mitchell Association Aquarium on the harbor and the Loines Observatory, 59 Milk St. Ext., which has two telescopes, a refurbished antique 8-inch Clark telescope and a state-of-the-art 24-inch research telescope.
