Greater Light, 8 Howard St., is a Nantucket Historical Association historic site. In the 1930s, Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan, two Quaker sisters from Philadelphia, used castaway architectural elements to transform an 18th-century livestock barn into an eclectic artists' salon and summer home. The creative siblings (one a muralist and the other an actress and author) purchased the building during Nantucket's art colony era, when the allure of inexpensive housing brought many starving artists to the inspiring island.
Period antiques offer visitors a glimpse into an art colony resident's way of life. A self-guiding tour includes a lovely woodland garden anchored by birch and London plane trees.
