USS Constitution, off I-93 exit 28 in Charlestown Navy Yard on the Freedom Trail inside Boston National Historical Park, was launched Oct. 21, 1797, at Edmund Hartt's shipyard and was the nemesis of French privateers and Barbary Corsairs. Engagements with the British in the War of 1812 brought the vessel fame and the nickname “Old Ironsides.” The 44-gun frigate was constructed of seasoned live and white oak and yellow and white pine timbers secured by bolts and copper sheathing made by Paul Revere. It is purportedly the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world.
U.S. Navy Sailors are assigned to the ship and available to answer questions about the ship's storied past and give oral presentations.
Note: Visitors 18 and older will be subject to a security screening and must present a valid federal or state issued photo ID or passport at the security entrance. Tours go below deck and require climbing a ladder; full mobility is required. Strollers are not permitted aboard the ship and must remain on the pier. Free tours Wed.-Sun. 10-4.
