Peabody Essex Museum, 161 Essex St., offers internationally renowned collections of art, architecture and culture encompassing more than 1 million works. Collections include maritime art and history; American decorative art, folk art, portraits and furniture; fashion and design; art from Japan, China, Korea and India; Pacific Islands, Native American, African and African American art; and photography and works of art on paper.
The museum also showcases fine examples of Early American architecture. Period gardens and 24 historic properties are on the premises. Especially noteworthy is the Yin Yu Tang house, a traditional Chinese merchant's house from the late Qing Dynasty.
Guided tours are available. Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
