AAA Editor Notes
Old Cambridge encompasses several blocks in and around the perimeter of Harvard Square. The original town plan and many early structures reflect Cambridge's history. Highlights include Christ Church, built in 1761 and said to be the oldest church building in the city; the 1753 Waterhouse House; and Harvard University, formerly Newtowne College, founded in 1636.
Another major concentration of historic buildings is along Brattle Street, just east of Harvard Square. The most well-known mansion on the street is the Georgian-style Longfellow House, home of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and headquarters for Gen. George Washington, commander in chief of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
