Portland Observatory is off I-295 exit 7 to jct. Congress and Franklin sts., then n. to 138 Congress St. Exhibits detail the history, architecture and preservation of what is said to be the last remaining maritime signal tower in the United States. The observatory served Portland's bustling waterfront from 1807 to the early 20th century. Views of Portland, the White Mountains and Casco Bay are available from the 86-foot-high tower, reached by stairs.
