AAA Editor Notes
Desert of Maine, I-295 exit 20 (Desert Rd.), then 2 mi. w. to 95 Desert Rd., is an area of sand dunes that has grown since the early 1900s. What was once the Tuttle Farm is now an area of moving sand dunes, some more than 90 feet high and covering trees and a small building. In 1897 the topsoil began to erode, exposing the ancient glacial plain. The barn is all that remains of the farm.
Guided coach and walking tours, nature trails, a butterfly observatory and a museum are available.
