Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site

Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site is at 1200 N. Main St. The 157-acre site borders Bayou Teche in a region settled by Acadians from Nova Scotia. The plantation home, Maison Olivier, was built around 1815 of cypress; brick; and bousillage, a mix of mud and moss packed between beams. Guided tours are offered of the house, where exhibits depict Creole plantation life. The visitor center offers exhibits and a 12-minute introductory film about the history of the area.
Surrounding the house is a landscape of fruit, nut and shade trees and vegetable and herb gardens. An outdoor kitchen, storehouse and a reproduction of an Acadian cabin also are on the grounds.
Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
