Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site is .25 mi. e. off US 61 to 12501 SR 10. Daniel Turnbull, a wealthy cotton planter, built the 16-room house approached by a live-oak avenue in 1835. Inspired by their honeymoon to the great gardens of Europe, including Versailles, his wife created 28 acres of formal gardens in the Louisiana wilderness. The gardens feature camellias, azaleas, medicinal herbs and century-old shrubs and trees and are dotted with Italian statuary and gazebos.

While most of the working portions of the plantation no longer exist, there are 13 historic buildings on the 371-acre site, including a doctor's office, kitchen, hothouse, milk house and barn. Guided tours offer a glimpse of 19th-century plantation life, including the lives and contributions of the plantation's enslaved workers.
