Barataria Preserve is on Barataria Blvd. (SR 45) on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Jefferson Parish and is part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. Established to maintain and preserve important coastal wetlands, the 23,000-acre unit of hardwood forest, cypress swamp and marsh is home to alligators, herons, egrets and nutria.
On the grounds are a visitor center and 9 miles of boardwalks and trails. Fishing (with a state license) is permitted. Ranger-led walks are offered. An audio tour by cellphone is available.
Guided tours are available. Recreational activities are permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
