Mammoth Cave, about 10 mi. w. of Cave City and 8 mi. n.w. of Park City off I-65, has more than 400 miles of known passageways with an average temperature of 54°F; bring a light jacket. Some underground rooms are as wide as 200 feet; the tallest dome is 192 feet high; the deepest pit is 105 feet. Guided cave tours, ranging from 1.25 to 6 hours, vary in degree of difficulty. Visitors should select the tour that best suits their physical abilities and dress appropriately. The cave is inhabited by creatures who have adapted to the darkness, including fish, cave crickets and eyeless crayfish. Tour schedules are available at the visitor center, from which all tours depart.
