Sternberg Museum of Natural History, off I-70 exit 159, 1 mi. s. on US 183, then following signs, re-creates the late Cretaceous period with dioramas of animated, life-size dinosaurs. The museum, part of Fort Hays State University, also contains one of the world’s best collections of fossilized prehistoric flying reptiles and creatures from the Cretaceous sea. One particularly unusual specimen is a fish within a fish.
For children, the Discovery Room contains a giant spider model, computer workstations, live animals and hands-on activities. Changing exhibits are featured throughout the year.
