Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site is at 603 S. 5th St. A popular poet of the early 1900s, Vachel Lindsay was born in this house in 1879 and died here 52 years later. Lindsay became famous for his theatrical readings of his poetry, which he wrote to be performed before an audience. He also is associated with his cross-country “tramps” during which he exchanged verses for food and lodging.
The restored home contains period furnishings.
