Old Idaho Penitentiary State Historic Site, 1.5 mi. e. of Broadway and Warm Springs Ave. at 2445 Old Penitentiary Rd., was used 1872-1973 as Idaho's state penitentiary. Additions to the complex were constructed by prisoners with sandstone they quarried and cut. Exhibits include historical weapons and vehicles and a video presentation recalling prison history, notorious residents and conditions of prison life.
Guided tours are offered on weekends and during summer months. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and dress for an outdoor experience. Picnicking is permitted outside the prison walls.
