Historical Museum of San Miguel de Allende
AAA Editor Notes
Historical Museum of San Miguel de Allende (Museo Histórico de San Miguel de Allende) is on Calle Cuna de Allende #1, opposite the s.w. corner of the main plaza; street parking is limited. It was the birthplace of Ignacio Allende, one of the few early leaders of the War of Independence with actual military training. Together, he and Father Miguel Hidalgo organized a ragtag army and plotted strategies for overthrowing Spanish rule.
The two-story building has a central courtyard and exhibits that offer a peek into what life was like in early 19th-century provincial Mexico. A typical kitchen is equipped with a wood-burning stove, fuels and local foodstuffs. Period furniture and artwork in the formal receiving room reflect the opulence enjoyed by the era's privileged citizens. Furnished living areas, a play room and a master bedroom also can be seen. In the courtyard there are small storage granaries, citrus trees and a quiet corner for spiritual contemplation. A mini theater shows a 5-minute film about the history of the house.
Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
