Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site

Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site is at 450 Auburn Ave. N.E.; the #3 Auburn Avenue bus, departing from the MARTA Five Points station, stops close to the visitor center. The 39-acre site encompasses the birthplace, church and grave of civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who paid the ultimate price as an impassioned advocate for civil rights when he was assassinated by James Earl Ray on April 4, 1968, while lending his support to a Memphis sanitation workers' strike. Coretta Scott King, who carried on her husband's work after his death, is buried beside her husband.

Dr. King's legacy endures as a source of inspiration to those who believe in social and economic equality for every American. The visitor center contains exhibits and video presentations relating to King's work and achievements and the Civil Rights Movement. The King Center, Dr. King's final resting place, features exhibits about Coretta Scott King and Mahatma Gandhi. The surrounding district preserves sections of Sweet Auburn, the neighborhood that was the center of Atlanta's African American community for most of the 20th century.
