Weedon Island Preserve is 1 mi. e. on 83rd Ave. (Patica Rd.) off Fourth St. N., then 1 mi. n.e. on San Martin Blvd., following signs to 1800 Weedon Dr. N.E. The 3,190-acre preserve is rich with a diversity of native flora and fauna and serves as a habitat for a variety of fish and wildlife. Recreational activities include hiking, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Boardwalks and an observation tower overlook the mangroves and estuary. Free guided hikes through the mangroves are offered on Saturday mornings. A variety of nature and archaeology programs are available.
The Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center features the Connecting People and Place exhibit gallery depicting the estuary and the Native American and early 20th-century influences that helped shape the preserve.
Note: Visitors participating in guided and self-guiding tours are advised to take along plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent and snacks.
Guided tours are available. Recreational activities are permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
